Story Telling in Art

Because art can be a language. I find that some of the most intriguing and touching artworks to me are those that tell a story. Whether it be a common everyday tale or a heart-wrenching story of heroics. The stories about our lives touch me, because I can connect with them. Their expressions of sorrow or joy cause me to remember similar times that I felt those feelings too.
One of the best visual examples of how art can be a story expressing sorrow and joy is the sand artist Kseniya Simonova, who performed on the Ukraine's Got Talent TV show. According to Wikipedia, her sand drawings constructed "an animation that portrayed life during the USSR's Great Patriotic War against the Third Reich in World War II." Truly, the emotions and depth of feelings, not to mention talent, prove that art can speak as clearly as words and in some ways deeper. When I first saw this, I was mesmerized and had to watch it several times. Her work is truly amazing. I have posted the video from YouTube on my blog.

The Power of Speaking through Art...

While pondering this subject, I came across this quote by Keith Bond.

"A work of art, deeply felt by the artist - even if the work is technically lacking - is a much stronger and a more powerful work of art than a masterfully crafted piece in which the artist had no emotional connection to the subject. For a work of art to be truly meaningful, the artist must have something to say. The artist must mean what they say. The artist must be sincere. . ."

I love this quote. It wonderfully describes that ability and need for each artist to deeply consider what they make and why. Art can be a language, but is often misused when we create art for art's sake. It is important for all who try to make an art piece to consider what they are trying to say, just as you would when you compose a letter. A meaningless jumble of letters may be aesthetically pleasing, but a whole new level of beauty and complexity is opened up when the artist puts in their beliefs and feelings.
